Overcoming Unwanted Change

May 01, 2020

We have all heard the saying “Change is good”, but when something unexpected happens in our lives or business, it is not always a change we want to embrace.  Change is hard, it messes up our flow and makes us have to shift our plans.  But hoping it goes away, getting angry, making excuses is not going to help us rise above it.

Acceptance vs. Resistance

In order to overcome the unexpected and come out the other side successfully, the first step is to acknowledge and accept that the change is happening.  This may seem obvious, but it can be hard to do in the moment. Our reactive nature really wants us to resist the change. Our brain tells all sorts of things to try and get around it. Things like “this is so unfair” or “it’s going to be too hard, I quit” or  “This is ridiculous, I’m not changing anything!”

If we reactively refuse to accept the change, we will be trampled by it.

Instead, we must accept it and then pause to give ourselves space to adapt proactively.  Our reactive nature wants us to feel safe and perceives the unwanted change as a threat. If we take time to pause for a moment, this will allow us to shift our mindset so we can make this change work for us, instead of being the victim of it.

Giving up, acting out, or running away will not help us rise above changes in our lives, but perseverance will. Accept the change, take a deep breath, and dive into the new possibilities.
